GUYMON, Okla. – Trevor Brazile isn’t out to chase ProRodeo records, but the milestones just keep coming.
On Sunday afternoon, the 33-year-old cowboy from Decatur, Texas, won the tie-down roping title at the Guymon Pioneer Days Rodeo and added more than $10,000 in earnings for his week of competing in the Oklahoma Panhandle’s biggest community. He also surpassed the $100,000 mark in 2010 earnings, breaking his own all-around record for surpassing six figures that was set May 14, 2006.
“The odds are in my favor to do well here,” Brazile said with a laugh.
But the seriousness is that Oklahoma’s Richest Rodeo fits well for the 11-time world champion who owns a record-tying seven all-around crowns, two steer roping titles and two tie-down roping gold buckles. He’s the only man in the history of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association to have qualified for the national finals in all four roping disciplines. He’s a regular fixture at the Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping and the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.
“It’s been a good year,” said Brazile, who is well on his way to surpass legendary roughstock cowboy Ty Murray – with whom he shares the record for all-around titles. “I’ve been blessed my whole career, and I haven’t changed anything as to how I’ve done it. It’s still having a strong work ethic and having the best horses.
“I never take my horses for granted, because they’re what got me to where I am.”
Brazile actually moved past the $100,000 mark by winning the third round and placing in the fourth round of steer roping on Friday afternoon. He just added to it on Sunday by placing in both the fifth round and average of steer roping and adding a round paycheck to his tie-down roping average championship.
And while he earned thousands of dollars in multiple events, Colorado cowboy Josh Peek won the Pioneer Days Rodeo all-around title. He won the steer wrestling average and finished second to Brazile in tie-down roping, all the while earning $12,919.
Three-time world champion Will Lowe of Canyon, Texas, won the bareback riding, matching moves with the Carr Pro Rodeo bronc Dirty Jacket for 87 points – it was the third straight time that Dirty Jacket carried a winner to the Guymon title. The horse, which bucked twice over the weekend, also carried Joe Gunderson of Agar, S.D., to second place.
“He’s just a real good horse, the kind you want in a bucking horse,” Gunderson said.
Brothers Jay and Austin Adams of Logandale, Nev., won team roping, while Neal Wood of Guy, Texas, and defending world champion Rocky Patterson of Pratt, Kan., shared the steer roping title. Tyler Smith of Fruita, Colo., rode Powder River/D&H Cattle Co.’s Rock Face for 90 points to win bull riding, and Josh Reynolds of Ekalaka, Mont., scored 86 on Carr’s Simple Man to win saddle bronc riding. Tana Poppino of Big Cabin, Okla., placed in both go-rounds and won the barrel racing title, the first Guymon victory for the two-time Wrangler NFR qualifier.
