Vernon Hiram Edens, 92, lifelong area resident, died Sunday afternoon, Aug. 29, 2010, at the Hansford Manor in Spearman, Texas.
The son of Hiram and Maud Frances (Carley) Edens, he was born Sept. 8, 1917, in Hough, Oklahoma. Vernon was raised in the Hough Community. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Vernon and Norma Evylene Ogan were united in marriage on June 13, 1942, at Liberal, Kansas. They made their home in Guymon and Goodwell, before moving to Gruver in 1963. Mr. Edens worked as a mechanic and a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the Gruver First Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hiram and Maud Edens; brother, Raymon Otis Edens; sister, Mary Ogan and two infants.
Survivors include his loving wife of 68 years, Norma Edens of the home, two brothers-in-law: George and wife, Barbara Ogan of Weatherford, Oklahoma and Dexter and wife, Loretta Ogan of Fresno, California and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning, Sept. 2, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Gruver with Pastor Scott Curry officiating. Graveside services with military honors will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Elmhurst Cemetery in Guymon.
The family suggests that memorials be given to the Hansford Hospice. Memorials will be accepted at the Bunch – Roberts Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1112, Guymon, Oklahoma.
