Gilbert “Mr. G” Bernie Padilla, 62, died Thursday morning, Sept. 2, 2010, at his home in Guymon.
The son of Alfonso and Carolina (Gonzales) Padilla, he was born June 27, 1948, in Las Vegas, New Mexico. He was raised in Las Vegas and worked in a dairy and as a farmer and carpenter in the Portales, New Mexico, area. Gilbert proudly served his country in the US Army during Vietnam, where he was awarded the Purple Heart.
Gilbert was united in marriage to Sylvia Ortega on Aug.19, 1969, in Las Vegas. The Padilla family moved to Guymon in 1980 from the Portales, New Mexico, area. He was a very talented carpenter, loved hunting, fishing and was an avid collector as well as being a loving husband, father and devoted grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his loving wife of over 41 years, Sylvia Padilla of the home; four children: Adrian Padilla and wife, Jana of Thermopolis, Wyoming, Linda and husband, Joe Lucero of Webster City, Iowa, Cindy and husband, Josh Farley of Burlington, New Jersey, and Joey Padilla and wife, Melissa of Guymon; ten grandchildren: Destiny Dominguez, Monica Padilla, Courtney Padilla, Anthony Padilla, Zac Lucero, Tyler Padilla, Kiyah Padilla and Kira, Kenna and Krista Oliver. Survivors also include his sister, Mary Ann and husband, Tim Lucero of Las Vegas, New Mexico; four brothers: Billy Padilla of Canyon, Texas, Carlos Padilla, Tony Padilla and wife, Jeannie and Alfonso Padilla, Jr. and wife, Karen all of Las Vegas, New Mexico, and numerous nieces, nephews and special friends.
A Rosary service will be held Monday evening, Sept. 6, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Guymon. Funeral Mass will be Tuesday morning, Sept. 7, at 10:00 a.m., also at St. Peter’s with Father Mike Wheelahan, celebrant. Interment with military honors will follow in the Elmhurst Cemetery. Services are under the care of the Bunch – Roberts Funeral Home of Guymon.
