Main Street Guymon explores home schooling field trip options

Melyn Johnson, Main Street Guymon director

To be able to go up to a horse and touch it, feeling the texture of the hair, smelling the horse scent and realizing the size of the animal is much more educational than reading about a horse.

Aerodynamics is a rather vague concept until someone sets a kite in front of you and explains it in a simpler way that is understandable. Then when you go out and fly that kite, aerodynamics doesn’t seem so intimidating. It starts to make sense.

Learning about a healthy lifestyle in a book isn’t nearly as easy as having Susan Barias explain right before you taste the delicious smoothie at Urban Bru.

All of these are options being given in a Home School Field Trip Proposal by Main Street Guymon. The proposals list over 30 ideas for field trips in Guymon and the surrounding area and are going to be mailed to regional Home School Associations to be shared with their members who are schooling their children at home.

“My hope is that some of the families will come to Guymon and spend a couple days visiting the wonderful educational experiences people here in the area are willing to share,” explains Main Street Director Melyn Johnson, who gathered the information for the proposals and put them together. “Not only will it increase visits to Guymon, it gives an opportunity for some of our really interesting folks to share what they know.”

When we have visitors, they eat their meals and maybe stay overnight, which is a sales increase for the city. The hope is also that they will spend money in our businesses. “When it’s good for our businesses,” says Johnson, “it’s good for Guymon.”

Some of the options listed in the proposal include meeting a local author for autograph signing and book talk; visiting the Guymon Daily Herald, Helms Garden Center, learning about community service by helping out at the Oaks of Mamre or Loaves and Fishes, visiting a vineyard, L&M Arena, Open Cross Ranch, OPSU, learning about skin care, learning Mexican folk dance, talking healthy at Urban Bru, touring the wastewater treatment plant, and doing an art project. There are many other options, including ones in the surrounding area.

If you would like a copy of the proposal or would like to make a suggestion for an addition to the proposal, please contact Melyn Johnson at Director@MainStreetGuymon.com or call 338-6246.
