Daily livestock summary 10/30/09

Amarillo — Here’s the daily livestock summary for Friday, Oct. 30, 2009.

                                     CATTLE      
Direct Trade:  In the direct slaughter cattle trade in the Five Major Marketing Areas, Texas/Oklahoma; Kansas; Nebraska; Colorado; Iowa/Minnesota; Thus far for Friday, trading in the Texas Panhandle, Northern Plains and Western Cornbelt has been limited on very light demand.  Not enough sales in these feeding regions to establish an adequate market test. 

In Kansas, trading was light on light
demand, a few sales of negotiated cash beef type steers and heifers steady with
Thursday trading at 87.50.  Steers: Live basis: (all Grades: 3,459 head) 87.50. 
Dressed basis; (all Grades: 280 head) 132.00-133.00, weighted average 132.86. 
Heifers: Live basis; (all Grades: 1,790 head) 87.50.  Dressed Basis; (all
Grades: 0 head).

For the week:  Texas/Oklahoma/New Mexico live sales 1.00-2.00 higher at 88.00. 
Kansas live sales 2.00-2.50 higher from 87.00-87.50 and dressed sales 3.00
higher at 139.00.  Nebraska dressed sales 3.00 higher at 135.00 and live sales
1.50-2.00 higher from 86.00-87.00.  Colorado live sales 1.00-2.00 higher from
86.00-87.00 and dressed sales at 136.00 on a light test.  Iowa/Minnesota live
sales 1.00-2.00 higher from 83.00-84.00 and dressed sales 2.00-3.00 higher from
132.00-135.00.

Auction Markets:
New Holland Sales Stables Cattle and Calf Auction Report for Thu Oct 29
   Compared to last week: A less attractive supply of steers on offer.  Steers
destine for Kosher slaughter sold steady to .50 lower, the remainder of the
steers sold steady to firm with moderate demand and moderate trade.  Heifers
sold steady to firm on a light test.
   Slaughter Steers: High Choice and Prime 2-3: 1280-1490 lbs 82.00-85.00; 1530-
1667 lbs 79.00-81.50; YG4-5  1290-1510 lbs 77.50-80.00.  Choice 2-3: 1190-1418
lbs 79.00-81.50.  High Select and low Choice 2-3: 1115-1335 lbs 76.50-79.00.
   Slaughter Heifers: High Choice and Prime 2-3: 1210-1380 lbs 80.00-82.00, few
up to 83.50; YG4-5  1350-1445 lbs 77.00-79.00.  Choice 2-3: 980-1305 lbs 74.00-
78.00.

The average live weight of cattle slaughtered in the Texas Panhandle for the
week ending 10-24-2009 was 1281 lbs with 41 percent heifers compared to 1281 lbs
and 45 percent heifers the previous week and 1269 lbs and 42 percent heifers the
same week a year ago.

52.30 and Eastern Cornbelt .04 lower at 42.50-51.35, weighted average 49.59.
         
   Live Basis (240-280 lbs): National direct barrows and gilt .35 lower at
33.25-42.00, weighted average 39.72.  Iowa-Minnesota 1.06 higher at 34.00-42.00,
