Daily livestock summary 07/31/09

Amarillo -- Here's the daily livestock summary for Friday, July 31, 2009, as reported by the USDA.

                                     CATTLE   
Direct Trade:
   In the direct slaughter cattle trade in the Five Major Marketing Areas,
Texas/Oklahoma; Kansas; Nebraska; Colorado; Iowa/Minnesota; Trading was light to
moderate in most feeding regions expect in Colorado where trade is at a
standstill.  Compared to last week, live sales in the Southern Plains 1.00
lower.  Dressed sales in Nebraska 1.00 to 2.00 lower.  Dressed sales in
Iowa/Minnesota sold 1.00 lower and live sales 1.00 to 2.00 lower.  Steers: Live
basis: (all Grades: 6,128 head) 81.00-83.00, weighted average 82.00.  Dressed
basis; (all Grades: 3,933 head) 127.00-132.00, weighted average 131.12.
Heifers: Live basis; (all Grades: 5,817 head) 81.00-82.50, weighted average
82.03.  Dressed Basis; (all Grades: 924 head) 130.00-132.00, weighted average
130.97.

For the Week:  Trade was light to moderate in most feeding regions expect in
Colorado where trade is at a standstill.  Compared to last week, live sales in
the Southern Plains 1.00 lower.  Dressed sales in Nebraska 1.00 to 2.00
lower.  Dressed sales in Iowa/Minnesota sold 1.00 lower and live sales 1.00 to
2.00 lower.

Auction Markets:
New Holland Sales Stables Cattle and Calf Auction Report for Thursday, July 30
   Compared to last Thursday, slaughter steers sold steady to firm with light to
moderate demand.
   Slaughter Steers: High Choice and Prime 2-3  1185-1501 lbs 84.75-86.00; Full
YG 4/5  1390-1562 lbs 82.25-83.75. Choice 2-3  1120-1535 lbs 82.00-84.50.  High
Select and Low Choice 2-3  1148-1530 lbs 79.00-81.75.  Select 1-2  1105-1445 lbs
75.00-78.50.
   Slaughter Heifers: High Choice and Prime 2-3  1235-1450 lbs 83.75-85.50.

The average live weight of cattle slaughtered in the Texas Panhandle for the
week ending 07-25-2009 was 1270 lbs with 35 percent heifers compared to 1267 lbs
and 36 percent heifers the previous week and 1256 lbs and 40 percent heifers the
same week a year ago.

   Dressed Basis: The direct hog trade prices are based on 185 lbs hog carcass
with 0.9-1.1 inch back fat and 6 inch square loin/2.0 inch depth plant
delivered.  National direct trade barrows and gilts .83 lower at 48.00-53.38,
weighted average 52.59.  Iowa-Minnesota 1.14 lower at 48.00-53.38, weighted
average 52.40.  Western Cornbelt 1.14 lower at 48.00-53.38, weighted average
52.69 and Eastern Cornbelt .53 lower at 49.25-53.38, weighted average 52.49.

   Live Basis (240-280 lbs): National direct barrows and gilt .76 lower at
38.50-47.40, weighted average 41.28.  Iowa-Minnesota 1.26 lower at 38.50-42.66,
weighted average 41.33.  Western Cornbelt 1.60 lower at 38.50-42.66, weighted
