Daily livestock summary 04/30/10

Amarillo — Here’s the daily livestock summary for Friday, April 30, 2010.

                                     CATTLE
Direct Trade: In the direct slaughter cattle trade in the Five Major Marketing Areas, Texas/Oklahoma; Kansas; Nebraska; Colorado; Iowa/Minnesota; negotiated cash trade and demand was light in Texas.  Trade was limited on light demand in Kansas, the Northern Plains as well as in the Western Cornbelt.  Not enough sales in any feeding region to establish an adequate market test.  Steers: Live basis; (all Grades: 1,508 head) 97.50-99.50, weighted average 98.01.  Dressed Basis; (all Grades: 80 head) 158.00-159.00, weighted average 158.50.  Heifers: Live basis; (all Grades: 1,609 head) 98.00-99.50, weighted average 98.19. Dressed Basis; (all Grades: 350 head) 158.00-159.00, weighted average 158.61.

For the week: Live sales in the Southern Plains traded .50 to 1.00 lower from
98.00-98.50.  In Kansas dressed sales traded 1.00 lower at 158.00.  In Nebraska
live sales traded .50 to 1.00 lower from 99.00 to mostly 99.50.  Dressed sales
traded steady to 1.00 lower from 157.00-158.00.  In Colorado live sales were .50
to 1.00 lower from 99.00-99.50. In the Western Cornbelt live sales traded 2.00
lower at 98.00 with dressed sales 1.00 to 3.00 lower from 157.00-159.00.

New Holland Sales Stables Auction Report for Thursday, April 29, 2010
   Compared to last week: Slaughter steers sold 1.00 to 1.50 higher.  Slaughter
heifers sold steady on limited receipts.
   Slaughter Steers: High Choice and Prime 3-4: 1305-1545 lbs 97.00-98.50; Full
YG4-5 1480-1610 lbs 94.00-96.00.  Choice 2-3: 1265-1490 lbs 94.00-96.50.
   Slaughter Heifers: High Choice and Prime 3-4: 1170-1305 lbs 93.00-95.00.

The average live weight of cattle slaughtered in the Texas Panhandle for the
week ending 04-24-2010 was 1200 lbs with 40 percent heifers compared to 1211 lbs
and 35 percent heifers the previous week and 1222 lbs and 36 percent heifers the
same week a year ago.

price 83.14.  Iowa-Minnesota .09 lower at 80.00-84.25, weighted average price
82.57.  Western Cornbelt .09 lower at 78.00-86.00, weighted average price 82.69. 
Eastern Cornbelt 1.28 higher at 81.50-88.50, weighted average price 83.80.

   Live Basis (240-280 lbs): National direct barrows and gilts 1.38 higher at 
54.45-69.33, weighted average 67.59.  Iowa-Minnesota 1.89 higher at 54.45-69.00,
weighted average 68.06.  Western Cornbelt 1.85 higher at 54.45-69.00, weighted
