Daily livestock summary 01/29/10

Amarillo -- Here's the daily livestock summary for Friday, Jan. 29, 2010.

                                     CATTLE
Direct Trade: In the direct slaughter cattle trade in the Five Major Marketing Areas,
Texas/Oklahoma; Kansas; Nebraska; Colorado; Iowa/Minnesota; Thus far for Friday,
negotiated cash trade was moderate to active on active demand in Kansas.
Compared to last week live sales traded steady.  Trade was inactive in the
Texas/Oklahoma/New Mexico feeding region.  Trade in the Northern Plains and
Western Cornbelt was light on moderate demand.  Compared to Thursday few live
sales traded .50 to 1.00 higher in Nebraska.  Compared to Thursday, live sales
traded steady in Colorado.  Not enough sales in the Western Cornbelt to
establish an adequate market test.  Steers: Live basis; (all Grades: 8,059 head)
83.00-85.00, weighted average price 84.74.  Dressed basis; (all Grades: 1,353
head) 134.00-136.00, weighted average price 135.58.  Heifers: live basis; (all
Grades: 7,337 head) 83.00-85.00, weighted average price 84.57.  Dressed Basis;
(all Grades: 718 head) 134.50-136.00, weighted average price 135.11.

For the week, in the Texas Panhandle not enough sales to establish an adequate
market trend.  The latest established market was last week with live sales at
86.00. In Kansas live sales traded steady at 85.00 with dressed sales 1.50 to
3.50 lower at 134.50.  In Nebraska live sales traded steady to 1.00 lower from
83.00 to 84.00 with dressed sales mostly 2.00 lower from 135.00 to 136.00.  In
Colorado live sales traded steady to 1.00 lower from 83.00 to 84.00.  In the
Western Cornbelt live sales traded .50 to 1.00 lower with prices ranging from
83.00 to 85.00 and dressed sales 2.00 to 4.00 lower from mostly 135.00 to
136.00.

The average live weight of cattle slaughtered in the Texas Panhandle for the
week ending 01-23-2010 was 1262 lbs with 40 percent heifers compared to 1258 lbs
and 44 percent heifers the previous week and 1274 lbs and 39 percent heifers the
same week a year ago.
